Being an independent OT, I am lucky to choose who I work with. Many months ago, I was tasked with designing and developing the Dyspraxia Centre of Excellence for Axia ASD Ltd.
I have a longstanding relationship with Axia because they understand neurodivergence, in all its beauty and complexity. I was honoured that they would commission my services for this centre and got to work. I was able to draw on a wide-ranging evidence base and years of clinical practice when developing our diagnostic pathway, but more than that, considering the Partnership Model, used at Axia, how this service can assess and support in a respectful and validating way.
It was a pleasure to collaborate with the dyspraxic community, listening and adapting as I created our FREE guides, ensuring they reflected the needs of individuals across the lifespan without being cognitively overwhelming to process.
Our official launch last week was just the beginning!
The Centre’s inception was driven by Dr Linda Buchan, in collaboration with her son Calvin Atkinson (both Directors at Axia). As a Consultant Clinical Psychologist, with lived experience, Dr Buchan provides a unique insight into the condition, combining authenticity and understanding with decades of clinical practice.
At the launch, we detailed our commitment to raising the profile of dyspraxia and ensuring that assessment and support are person-centred, delivered by a wide-ranging multidisciplinary team and in partnership with the individual.
We understand dyspraxia is often overlooked or misunderstood; as a childhood condition, something you grow out of. There are cognitive, social, and emotional dimensions to dyspraxia that are often forgotten. We know that labels like “clumsy” or “lazy” don’t fit, and they can cause real harm.
